Taking a trip back in time to the regal courts of British kings and queens... How many of these films have you seen? Which ones have been your favourites? (Top Ten results posted here)
Thought I would post the results from the two latest polls. Both polls were indirectly motivated by Downton Abbey. The poll asking Which Edwardian films have you seen? was a result of my longing to fill the void left by its conclusion and wanting to see more period dramas from that era.
The second poll was inspired after hearing about the upcoming remake of and of Upstairs, Downstairs and Downton Abbey, both which focus on the servants downstairs as well as the residents of the house upstairs and asked in the "Up-Down" poll: Which period dramas have you seen feature the hired help?
~ EDWARDIAN FILM POLL ~
Top 3: Titanic, Finding Neverland, My Fair Lady
(220 people voted with a total of 2760 votes)
~ UP-DOWN POLL ~
Top 3: Jane Eyre, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins
(272 people voted with total of 2064 votes cast)
I have to say that I was surprised how few people have seen Upstairs, Downstairs considering how it's said to be "greatly anticipated". I 'm guessing that many of the people who voted are of a younger generation who haven't seen the British classic which I've heard is beloved by many.
With the announcement of two similar upcoming period dramas that revolve around household servants, it made me think about other dramas that revolve around the 'hired help'.
Coming up this fall, there will be an update of Upstairs, Downstairs (this time it will move ahead to 1936) as well as a new drama of Downton Abbey (set in Edwardian country house in 1912, penned by Julian Fellowes).
As much as I abhor people being treated as servants and the division of class, I find that I'm fascinated by these films which give us a glimpse of what they must have gone through in their daily lives.
Here are other period dramas that feature the hired help:
Which of these period dramas from the past year have you seen? (poll below)
Which ones would you like to see?? If you're like me, I'm waiting for the chance to see a lot of these films!
As we approach the end of 2009, I was surprised to see how many period films made their debut this year. Many of them are smaller films or made-for-tv so they're not as well known. And some have only debuted in December so many of us haven't yet had the chance to catch them!
