Dorothy of Oz (2012)

Lea Michele, the star of Glee,
has landed the lead role in the animated 3D Wizard of Oz update
"Dorothy of Oz
"

Jim Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Kelsey Grammer have all already signed on to play the Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man, respectively, and Oliver Platt, Megan Hilty, Hugh Dancy and Martin Short round out the cast of new characters — Martin is playing Dorothy’s arch nemisis, now that the Wicked Witch of the West is dead.

Bryan Adams is writing the first songs and lyrics for the film along with writing partner Jim Vallance.

"Jester, the new arch-nemesis of Dorothy and all of Oz. The Jester is "a performer without
his coveted audience" and the role is rife with comedy, song, and lighthearted wickedness."

"Tin Man, who with his new found heart is literally wearing his emotions on his sleeve
and now needs to carry an extra oil can due to all his weeping."

"Lion who is reveling in his new role as guardian and protector of Oz.
Continuously attempting to remove the word "Cowardly" from his moniker with little success,
he is forced to overcompensate with acts of exaggerated bravado."

Scarecrow, who famously once sang "If I only had a brain," but has learned
one should be careful what they wish for as now he finds himself
in a position of authority that is entirely unfamiliar.

"soft-hearted and candy-coated"

"humorous old soul and adventure-seeking"

______________Synopsis______________

Dorothy returns to Kansas to find it devastated by the tornado that had whisked her away to the magical Land of Oz. The home she had been so desperate to return to is no longer; the townspeople, with nowhere to turn, are packing up and moving out. However, before Dorothy can even begin to react to or resist this change, she is transported back to Oz by equally magical methods as her first trip. Oz is in trouble, and the people there need her help: Dorothy's old friends - the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion - have disappeared and the land is in a state of decay. As Dorothy journeys to find her friends, she encounters a number of new companions and problems, including a man made of marshmallows who can't think for himself, a china doll princess whose bossiness is a cover for her fragility, and a tugboat with as many personalities as he has pieces. Dorothy must help this odd group band together against a wicked new villain - a jester who thinks all of Oz should be under his control.
Summertime is aiming at completing "Dorothy" by the end of next year with distribution not yet set. Veteran animation producer Bonne Radford ("Curious George," "The Road to El Dorado") is producing with Dan St. Pierre ("Everyione's Hero") directing.

"Dorothy" is based on the writings of children's author Roger S. Baum, great-grandson of "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" author L. Frank Baum. Summertime is aiming to make several more pics based on Roger Baum's stories.

Musical components will be supervised by Vicki Hiatt with lyrics by Tift Merritt and Mike Himelstein. Jim Dooley will contribute to the score.

The Beautiful Game - Andrew Lloyd Webber

I was browsing Andrew Lloyd Webber's website and discovered that he's composed the music for The Beautiful Game (with book and lyrics by Ben Elton) which debuted in 2000. It's about a group of teenagers growing up amid religious intolerance in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1969, (with title taken from Pelé's autobiography My Life and the Beautiful Game).

It was rewrited and retitled The Boys in the Photograph and is currently playing at The Joburg Theatre in South Africa, just in time for World Cup?

Here's the song that captured my attention...

My Fair Lady (2012)

Update (March 26/2010)
Emma Thompson, who's writing the screenplay for this updated version of 'My Fair Lady' has said that Carey Mulligan is 'set to play' the role of Eliza Doolittle. Thompson also indicated that she'd love to see Hugh Grant take on the role of Henry Higgins but no word on whether Hugh is interested in doing so...
>>read more about Mulligan being cast

>great article with more details about film

Update (Nov.01/09): Keira is no longer attached to the project, instead Carey Mulligan, Gemma Arterton and Emily Blunt are names that have been mentioned as possibilities. IMDb even has Mulligan listed as 'rumored' to play Ms. Doolittle but I wonder if there's any insider information or if it's just speculation at this point.

Update (Sept.12/10): Wright is not directing and that it will instead by directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love, Mrs. Brown, Captain Corelli's Mandolin).

"Elizabeth Swann", "Elizabeth Bennett" and now "Eliza Doolittle" will be taken on by Keira Knightley. (Wonder if she'll ever take on the role of Queen Elizabeth?) We already heard that Knightley was rumoured to take on the lead role in "My Fair Lady" and it now appears to be more official. Daniel Craig's name has been mentioned for Higgins...(Joe Wright who directed Kiera in P&P was mentioned as director but he has stated that he's not part of this production)

It seems that this proposed film is stirring a lot of opinions since many feel that you can't remake a classic like this. Others are quick to offer suggestions for who they'd like to see fill the shoes of Higgins and Eliza. Although it appears that Keira has been cast, some have suggested Claire Danes would be a worthy candidate having performed on Broadway in Pygmalion.

Someone on IMDb suggested Mr.Darcy take on the role of Higgins. My first reaction was "not a bad idea"...wouldn't it be ironic to have Colin Firth play opposite Keira?? Bring together the 1995 Darcy with the 2005 Elizabeth? However, the Darcy alluded to was in fact Matthew Macfadyen, an idea that I personally think would be too weird.

The big question seems to be who will take on the role of Henry Higgins?
Daniel Day-Lewis was mentioned earlier but his name seems to have been replaced with Daniel Craig until we hear differently. If they haven't yet cast Craig, suggestions have been made for:

Hugh Laurie
Jeremy Northam
David Tennant
Pierce Brosnan
Bill Nighy
Matthew Macfadyen
Colin Firth
Gerard Butler
Hugh Jackman

What will make this movie remake different? Since Cameron Mackintosh is on board, how different is the musical from the 1964 film? (Official site for My Fair Lady the Musical)

Read Emma Boswood's post in "The Telegraph" ...
Unfortunately coming soon: 'My Fair Lady' starring Keira Knightley… and Zac Efron?

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

This 1968 film stars Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes.

Synopsis:
In the early 20th century England, eccentric Caractacus Potts works as an inventor, a job which barely supports himself, his equally eccentric father, and his two adolescent children, Jeremy and Jemima. But they're all happy. When the children beg their father to buy for them their favorite plaything - a broken down jalopy of a car sitting at a local junk yard - Caractacus does whatever he can to make some money to buy it. One scheme to raise money involves the unexpected assistance of a pretty and wealthy young woman they have just met named Truly Scrumptious, the daughter of a candy factory owner. But Caractacus eventually comes into another one time only windfall of money, enough to buy the car. Using his inventing skills, Caractacus transforms the piece of junk into a beautiful working machine, which they name Chitty Chitty Bang Bang because of the noise the engine makes. At a seaside picnic with his children and Truly, Caractacus spins a fanciful tale of an eccentric inventor, his pretty girlfriend (who is the daughter of a candy factory owner), his two children, and a magical car named Chitty all in the faraway land of Vulgaria. The ruthless Baron Bomburst, the ruler of Vulgaria, will do whatever he can to get his hands on the magical car. But because of Baroness Bomburst's disdain for them, what are outlawed in Vulgaria are children, including the unsuspecting children of a foreign inventor of a magical car. (IMDb)
