Downton Abbey gals in Vogue

The actresses that portray the Crawley sisters of DOWNTON ABBEY
(Michelle Dockery, Jessica Brown Findlay and Laura Carmichael)
have been featured in the latest issue of Vogue (UK).
Thanks to Jessica Brown Findlay Online, we get a peek at the magazine article!

Quotes about filming season 2:
Michelle Dockery: "Mary is becoming a woman and is moving on from her relationship with Matthew, but she's a contradiction because in a way he's everything she wants."

Laura Carmichael: "It's fun watching the changes in what we're filming now, the skirts shortening and Edith, who was the silliest of the three, opening up through the drama of war."

Dorothy's shoes in The Wizard of Oz

Some interesting and iconic film costumes are about to go on auction from actress Debbie Reynold's extensive collection including the shoes that were originally worn by Judy Garland. I was surprised to see the style that was initially chosen and after seeing them, I am glad that they decided to go another route!

From the Wall Street Journal:
"These ruby slippers were used during the first 2 weeks of filming 'The Wizard of Oz' but then rejected in favour of the less Aladdin-reminiscent ones now indelibly inscribed in the American imagination. The early footage had to be reshot."

Items in the auction set for June 18th of this year include Audrey Hepburn's ascot gown in 'My Fair Lady', Charlie Chaplin's bowler hat, Vivien Leigh's 'drapery hat' in 'Gone with the Wind', and Marilyn Monroe's halter-neck dress from 'The Seven Year Itch' which is expected to sell for over $1million. Debbie Reynolds has taken four decades to amass this collection of thousands of items and has decided to sell them after failing to find a place to house all of it. It's unfortunate since it sounds to me like her collection would have made a museum worth a visit!

Hats designed by Philip Treacy

Now THESE are the hats that I would have loved to see decked out on the heads of the ladies at the royal wedding!! Renowned milliner Philip Treacy created hats for 36 guests who attended the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton, including the now infamous hat worn by Princess Beatrice and other guests shown at bottom of post.

Wouldn't it have been lovely to see these hats at the wedding?
(From Treacy's spring/summer collection)

♥ this.

Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece

Zara Phillips, Princess Michael of Kent, Duchess of Westminster, Lady Frederick Windsor

Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, Princess Mathilde of Belgium,
Victoria Beckham, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson

When asked about hats made for Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Treacy replied, “My inspiration was beauty and elegance it’s a 21st century royal wedding... No, they didn’t tell me [what they wanted] because I’ve known them for a long time and I wanted them to look gorgeous and beautiful. They trusted me to make them. Gorgeous and beautiful can be open to interpretation … I thought they looked gorgeous and beautiful. But no one is crying if anyone didn’t.” (Hollywood Life)

Thanks to Jenny from Jane Austen Movie Blog for mentioning Treacy's site!
She loves movies and hats as much as I do!

Where were the great hats for the Royal Wedding?

One of the things I had looked forward to when watching last Friday's royal wedding was a glimpse of some fashionable hats (fully expecting that the invited distinguished guests would show up in style). I was sadly disappointed. I am NOT a fan of those silly fascinators which sit so awkwardly upon the head bearing little resemblance to a hat. As for the ladies who actually wore a hat, I detest the current style of wearing it off the side of the head or to the front which makes it appear as if a strong wind attempted to blow it off and the hat-wearer failed to notice. Was I expecting too much? Perhaps I've been spoiled by the Royal Ascot ladies of My Fair Lady?

Here are some examples of what I'd hoped to see...

The following are some of the hats spotted at the wedding,
the day when even a dog had more fashion than a princess...

Princess Letizia of Spain
Perhaps the fact that her outfit looked Edwardian
earned her top marks with me?!

Queen Elizabeth II / Carole Middleton / Princess Michael of Kent

Daughters of Charles, Earl of Spencer / Duchess of Cornwall

Lorna Brooking / Lady Helen Taylor / Princess Ameerah of Saudi Arabia

Queen Sofia of Spain / Sophie, Lady Windsor / Princess Victoria of Sweden

Joss Stone / Grand Duchess of Luxembourg / Princess Mathilde of Belgium

Katharine, Duchess of Kent
Not that fond of her hat but she looks so endearing.

Oh dear, we made a royal mess!
(Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Princess Anne)

WHAT was Princess Beatrice thinking?
Besides being a fashion miss, how were guests supposed to be able to converse with her
and not be distracted by the monstrosity on her head?

Princess Eugenie / Zara Phillips / Autumn Phillips

Queen Margrethe of Denmark / Chelsea Davy / Victoria Beckham

Wave goodbye to fashion...

And yes, even a dog (spotted on the sidelines of the wedding route)

was able to show more style sporting her tiara
than the princess 5th in line to the throne...
