    According to the review at Rope of Silicon, "it uses sound effects and a late moment of dialogue but is otherwise completely silent."

  4. Yet another version of that tired remake--"A Star Is Born." Let's see.....the USA released this title first in 1937, followed by remakes in 1954, 1976, and now 2013 with Di Caprio and Knowles. South Korea did it in 1960 and Serbia in 2010. This truly is "what's old is new."

  5. @Mei-li,
    I didn't know that he had won Best Actor at Cannes. Thanks for mentioning!

    @Carla,
    I agree that I'm not keen on the remake of Star is Born with Beyonce and although this plot reminds us of it, it's not an adaptation of it.

  6. "The Artist is yet another variation on 'A Star is Born', a chestnut so frequently filmed (and unofficially remade) as to have entered the public domain," notes Guy Lodge at "In Contention". [May 15, 2011]

  7. @Carla,
    Lodge has his own opinion but I've not read anything from the director/writer indicating that it is a direct adaptation of A Star is Born although I'm sure he wouldn't deny its influence.
