War Horse - award winning play

I've been anticipating the upcoming feature film of War Horse, directed by Steven Spielberg and couldn't imagine how this novel by Michael Morpurgo would be performed as a play. It won Best Direction, Best Scenic Design and Best Play during tonight's Tony Awards where I got a glimpse of the awesome "puppet" horses used during the play which tells the tale of a horse during WWI.

Check it out!

  1. I hadn't heard of War Horse until an acquaintance mentioned they downloaded the ebook but hadn't finished it, then saw this video on a friend's facebook page. For anyone interested in an in-depth on the creation and manipulation of the horse puppet, check this out!

It's an 18 minute video -- "Beginning with the tale of a hyena's subtle paw, puppeteers Kohler and Basil Jones build to the story of their latest astonishment: the wonderfully life-like Joey, the War Horse, who trots (and gallops) convincingly onto the TED stage." (from the clip's caption)

The first 9 minutes are background information about how they went from a hyena puppet to the effort involved in creating the horse puppet... then after that, it's another 9 minutes of the horse being demonstrated! It's AMAZING!

Case in point -- 3 puppeteers control the horse, all coordinated, but they -can't talk- to each other, because they all have to give different parts/noises of the horse's noises. Gah. @_@ Amazing.

  3. You're welcome, glad you liked it! I would love to see it on the big stage too, but... New York is far away, and London is further! I happened to catch a bit of the Tony Awards, and Neil Patrick Harris rode the horse on stage too. XD Hahah. Good times!
