Matt Smith (Doctor Who) currently training for his Olympic role...
"Bert and Dickie, written by William Ivory is set in the run-up to the "austerity Games" held three years after the war [1948], and tells the story of Bertram Bushnell and Richard Burnell.
It will also explore how London coped with staging the first post-war Games with rationing still in place."
BBC press office: "Just six weeks before the final of the 1948 London Olympics, Bert Bushnell and Dickie Burnell are teamed together to race for Olympic gold in the double sculls. This is the uplifting story of their achievement and how London managed to pull off a brilliant, if make do and mend Olympic Games at a challenging time for the city and the nation."
Smith will portray Bushnell as filming begins this August.
This 90-minute production will air on BBC One.
