American Girl movie about to start filming

Speculated for nothing!...I'm trying to guess which American Girl they will be bringing to life next in this upcoming film about to begin production in Winnipeg. They've already done Felicity (set in 1774), Samantha (1904), Molly (1944) and Kit (1934) so that leaves the possibility of it being: Kaya (1764), Josefina (1824), Kirsten (1854), Addy (1864), Rebecca (1914) or Julie (1974).

Update: Disappointed that it's not an adaptation of one of the historical American girls but that it's set in modern day

Starring: Jade Pettyjohn
with Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) playing her mother

To be produced by Debra Martin Chase
(Princess Diaries, Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants)

  1. As much as I would like another historical American Girl movie, it is also possible that this is another "girl of the year" movie, like the one they made for Chrissa.
Also, how ironic is it that they film the American Girl movies in Canada?

Oh, you're right! It could be a modern film but I hope not as they don't seem as interesting to me!
Yes, it is funny that they're filming here but it appears that Vardalos is the momentum behind it wanting to do this film for her daughter?

  4. Based on those two actresses I'd say a Kirsten, Rebecca or Julie movie. Although Nia Vardalos doesn't scream Swedish to me I think that a Kirsten movie was next on their agenda. Otherwise they are probably doing Julie because Jade Pettyjohn looks a lot like Julie from the book covers.
Thanks for reporting this news! My sister and I love the American girls books and films!

  5. @Laurie,
I'm placing odds on it being about Kirsten since Manitoba's not far from Minnesota...

On closer inspection of my sister's Julie book I'm really thinking that Nia Vardalos looks just like the mom in the book and Jade Pettyjohn looks just like Julie! I hope they are doing that because I don't think the casting would be quite right for a Kirsten movie. But you're right, Manitoba isn't that far from Minnesota and Julie's story takes place in San Francisco.

  7. @Laurie,
I'm wondering if it's the Julie film as well since it was mentioned as the next one to be done but I've no interest in the '70's.

I don't have any interest in the 1970's either. My sister read the first Julie book and really didn't like it, especially the themes running through it. Also it just doesn't seem very "historical" because my parents grew up in the '70's.

  9. Too bad, it's not a historical film afterall! Posted link above for recent article which shows cast in modern clothing.
