Period Drama Weddings

How could I post about Weddings from the Past and not include Period Films?
Spoiler Alert: Since many weddings are at the conclusion of the drama, you will see plot developments ahead of time, if you've not seen these films already...

(Films shown above: The Sound of Music, The Young Victoria, The Buccaneers, Pride and Prejudice (1995), The Duchess, Jane Eyre (2006) and Marie Antoinette)

Here are a selection of weddings as seen in period dramasfollowed by the name of the actresses that portrayed the bride.

Cranford (Kimberly Nixon as Sophy)
I love the scene where Miss Matty gives the muslin to Sophy for her wedding dress and of course the fact that Dr. Harrison overcame his "engagements" to Augusta and Mrs. Rose. Awesome series. Sweet couple.

  1. Dr. Quinn! The Fall! I love this post.

  2. Frances O'Connor is wearing a white dress in the last scene of MP. I think that is the wedding dress. I am not 100% sure though.

  3. Peri, I always think of you when I think of Dr. Quinn!

Issy, I already rewatched the ending of Mansfield Park but it's a different dress! The museum that has her wedding dress definitely attributed it to the film so I'm guessing that the scene got cut or they just decided not to use it?

  4. This was a happy post for me--especially the inclusion of Anne Shirley and Our Mutual Friend.

  5. Absolutely GORGEOUS post! Thank you for all of your hard work on this, as always!

  6. Charleybrown, Its sad they cut it out, it is such a pretty dress.

  7. I stumbled on your collection of period film stills. The prestige is my favorite period piece... I am slated to possibly shoot a period music video here soon. I was wondering if you knew any other good resources/contacts for that sort of art direction, etc.

  8. W Schmidt,
Sorry but I know nothing of art direction for films!

  9. I always love a good wedding at the end of a period piece movie - these were lovely to look at.

  10. Love this post - so appropriate at the moment! :)

We love period dramas too and have just started a fictional blog in period style.

check it out - we could do with some followers! :)

  11. Thank-you for putting these dresses together in one place. I am looking to make my own wedding dress and love all of the period styles. Just what I needed to start me off
