Downton Abbey - Christmas Special planned!

Besides the 8 episodes already planned for this coming fall, ITV and Carnival Films has announced that there will also be a Christmas special of Downton Abbey which will continue where Season 2 ends.

Gareth Neame, Executive Producer and Managing Director, Carnival Films says, “The public’s reaction to the first series of Downton Abbey was gratifying. With a combined audience of 12.8 million people tuning into the last episode we are delighted ITV have decided to return with all the main characters of Downton at Christmas.”

Laura Mackie, Director of Drama, ITV said: “Julian [Fellowes] has come up with a fantastic story that will give the audience the chance to enjoy the experience of the festive season at Downton Abbey. We’re delighted to have this as part of our Christmas schedule for December 2011.”

Press Release

I do hope that both Hugh Bonneville and Maggie Smith will be along for the ride!

  1. Simply marvelous! We love Downton Abbey, and are really excited about watching the story unfold. If it is coming out at Christmas in the UK, does that mean that we won't see it until Easter?

  2. Oh dear, I didn't think of that! I suppose we will see it out of season in North America unless they postpone showing it until Christmas 2012.

  3. This is great news - I adored everything about Downton Abbey and am so looking forward to the second series, let alone a Christmas special!

Did you see the updated Upstairs Downstairs that was shown in the UK over Christmas 2010? It was only three episodes and could so easily have been a full series...

  5. Great news about Upstairs Downstairs - much as I loved it I did feel slightly cheated that they crammed so many storylines into such a short series. Long live the period drama!
