(A few characters are not mentioned in the novel.)

SHIRING NOBILITY

BARTHOLOMEW

Earl of Shiring at the beginning of our story and supporter of Maud’s right to the throne. His conspiracy against Stephen’s usurpation of the throne is the cause of his downfall and his children’s dire suffering.

ALIENA
portrayed by Hayley Atwell
A force to be reckoned with, Aliena is Bartholomew’s beautiful and intelligent daughter. She is the object of William’s obsession and after her family’s fall from grace, she must use her resourcefulness and inner strength to survive and aid her brother back to his rightful place as Earl. She is our story’s heroine and the love of our hero’s life.

RICHARD
portrayed by Sam Claflin
Bartholomew’s son and Aliena’s younger brother. Aliena must help him find his inner courage and overcome his lethargy in order to fight for what was wrongfully taken from them.

REGAN HAMLEIGH

A megalomanic who will stop at nothing, Regan is Percy’s ambitious wife. What her husband lacks in intelligence and savvy, she more than makes up for. She is possessed with the desire to move her family up the social ladder, and will stop at nothing. Her disfigured face is a mirror into her soul.

PERCY HAMLEIGH
portrayed by Robert Bathurst
A gentleman farmer, who is awarded valuable lands in the Earldom of Shiring after the mysterious death of Henry I’s only legitimate son. Percy is a man of more cunning than intelligence – a dangerous combination when combined with wealth and power.

WILLIAM HAMLEIGH
portrayed by David Oakes
Percy and Regan’s strikingly handsome yet brutish son. William’s sick obsession with the Earl of Shiring’s daughter, Aliena, becomes the driving force in his life. He is his mother’s pawn in her master plan to gain power and wealth for her family. William’s upbringing primes him for nothing shy of pure evil.

WALTER
portrayed by Goetz Otto
William’s loyal right-hand man; a thug, who is as sick as he is violent.

ELIZABETH

BUILDERS AND PEASANTS

TOM BUILDER
portrayed by Rufus Sewell
Tom, an architect with a vision, is master mason and the first builder of the cathedral at Kingsbridge. A tall, handsome man, whose only ambition in life is to build a cathedral because it will be a thing of beauty. He would like to instill this dream in his son, but must find another to carry the torch.

JACK
portrayed by Eddie Redmayne
A young man with a gift, Jack is Ellen and Shareburg’s son. Jack is an artist, architect, dreamer, the love of Aliena’s life and our story’s hero. He becomes Tom’s protégé and continues to build his dream for generations to come.

ELLEN
portrayed by Natalia Woerner
A woman who can solve the mystery that sets the story in motion, Ellen is considered a witch by most. Ellen is an out-law, who lives in the woods with her son. Her intense and unusual eyes bewitch many, including Tom, who accepts her help after Agnes’ death and eventually also her love. Her spell on Waleran, however, is less beguiling.

ALFRED
portrayed by Liam Garrigan
Tom and Agnes’ son. Alfred looks like his handsome father but lacks the necessary intelligent interest in the job to ever really become a master builder like his father. When Agnes dies, Alfred’s world crumbles and when his father picks up the pieces in an attempt to move forward, he grows spiteful of everything new in Tom’s life and becomes Jack’s nemesis.

AGNES
portrayed by Kate Dickie
Tom’s adored wife, who dies in childbirth, blessing his dream of building a cathedral with her last breath.

MARTHA (10 years old) portrayed by Skye Bennett

MARTHA (22 years old) portrayed by Emily Holt

MONKS AT KINGSBRIDGE

PRIOR PHILIP
portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen

Brother Remigius is a sly and manipulative monk. He agrees to become the eyes and ears of Waleran in the hope of that Waleran will support his attempts to be the next Prior of Kingsbridge.

The monastery’s cellarer and Philip’s friend and confidant.

A foundling baby, raised by the monks, especially Johnny Eightpence, at Kingsbridge.

ROYAL COURT

HENRY I
portrayed by Clive Wood
England’s King at the start of our story. Should he die, England is left with only one legitimate offspring as heir to the throne, his childless daughter Maud. Other possible heirs are his bastard son, or his nephew – a political war is waiting to happen.

MAUD
portrayed by Alison Pill
Henry I’s daughter and rightful heir to the throne of England. To secure her the necessary support against those who would kill before seeing a woman on the throne, she dutifully marries and conceives a child. Maud is a beautiful woman, who is impetuous and very sharp.

portrayed by Freddie Boath
Maud’s infant son, who becomes the direct heir to the throne.
