n 1890, in the village of Ste-Adèle, Quebec, young Donalda Laloge falls in love with Alexis Labranche, who is about to leave the village for a few months, but promises to marry her when he returns. While Alexis is gone, Donalda’s father promises her hand in marriage to the miserly mayor, Séraphin Poudrier, in exchange for a loan that will keep his general store in business. Knowing that she has no choice, the young girl resigns herself to marry the old man, who profits from the poor by taking away their land to build a new railway line. When Alexis returns to Ste- Adèle, Donalda can’t stay away from him.
