  1. This seems like a fairly well drawn out list. I've only seen a few of these though:
    2. WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1939)
    9. THE 39 STEPS (1935)
    20. THE REMAINS OF THE DAY (1993)
    23. THE HEIRESS (1949)
    25. THE LORD OF THE RINGS SERIES (2001-2003)

And I think the only books I've read of these is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I've read some of Wuthering Heights but couldn't get into the story.

  2. I've only read/seen a handful, but with regards to Wuthering Heights, I couldn't disagree more.

While I agree that none of the subsequent adaptations has matched the dark power of the brilliant Wyler’s, this movie is one of the main reasons people hate WH who come to it thinking it is a great love story. It isn't--it's pathological, it's compelling, it's startlingly well-written and powerful, but it isn't about love. To say it's true to the book is laughable.

  3. I love lists and comparing our own choices to someone else's compilation of the best out there. I just gave myself permission recently to dislike Wuthering Heights so Ms. Katsoulis can like it all she wants, it's not for me :)

  4. I've seen 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, most of 9, and 23, and I've read 1, 2, and 23.

  5. Thanks for pointing out this article, Charley. Very interesting list, but it's such a wide field! I think there have been loads of other great adaptations too, but I do love many of the films listed here (I've seen about half of them), especially 'Dr Zhivago' - I also liked the later adaptation, but the Lean film is the best. 6. A think any adaptation is going to be worse than the books and I can't remember an exception...
I absolutely have to disagree both with the Harry Potter series and the Lord of the Rings as being good adaptations, even though I absolutely love the books and the films...
By the way, this is a great blog! I always come here to see what's new in period movies. Thanks!
