Hidden Gems

Here's a list of recommended films compiled from the members of the Facebook group. Our list of "favourite movies" was getting rather long so we created "hidden gems" to list some of the films that not everyone has seen. There is a huge list of period films on Eras of Elegance, which I find to be extensive and I recommend you check it out, if you're looking for more period films! I don't mean for this list to be an exhaustive one but rather a list of "hidden gems", those films that you love and you want others to know about! If your favourite is not in this list, please comment below.

  1. My all time favorite period movie is "Somewhere In Time" with Jane Seymore and the late Christopher Reeve. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous! And the soundtrack is beautiful and haunting.

  12. No no no no no, not Becoming Jane -_-
Try Miss Austen Regrets instead, it's one of my favourite movies of all time, starring the beautiful Olivia Williams as Jane =)

  13. Lewelyn-H,
Many of the members of our group like Miss Austen Regrets as well. It actually wasn't on the list because it wasn't a 'hidden' gem but known to be a favourite!

  14. You might consider adding the very scary 1989 horror/mystery movie "The Woman in Black" to the list. While not entirely ignored, it certainly isn't a very mainstream piece.

(Actually, they're planning a new version for 2011 with Daniel Radcliffe and Ciaran Hinds - So the older adaptation may be start getting more attention, soon.)

  15. Renee, I heard about the Radcliffe film and I was surprised to find out that there was an earlier version. I've added it to the list!

  16. "The Little Minister", from the 1934, with Katharine Hepburn. It's lovely.
And of course "The 39 Steps" with Rupert Penry Jones :D
It really is nice to see Cold Comfort Farm acknowledged - my favourite book, not nearly enough people have watched the film, despite it having half the period actors in Britain involved.

  17. Added Little Minister to the list! 39 Steps is already in main index :)
